The Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs is a small, but very active chapter that is deeply involved with our community, our colleges, and our profession. NEW ACTIVITIES The Chapter has been concerned with a growing shortage of CPAs within the Valley. Insufficient students were passing the CPA exam to replace the CPAs that retired, died or relocated. Combined with the explosion of new businesses and new residents to the Valley, the shortage is projected to quickly become critical to the business community. To turn this situation around, the chapter jointly sponsored with STC the introduction of a live Becker CPA Review course offered at the Pecan Campus of STC. This course is reputed to be the best course available in the United States with double the passing rate of any other course. The initial class was introduced January 27, 2007 at a cost of $2,570.00 per student, including books. The TSCPA offers a $250.00 voucher to student members registering for the full course and Becker offers financing options. In addition, the Chapter is holding a raffle to raise money for Becker Review Course scholarships. (Please see the student page for more information on the scholarships). The drawing will be held August 16, 2007. The winner will receive a Las Vegas package that includes a round trip ticket on Allegiant Air for two people, 4 days 3 nights at the Bellagio with an upgraded lake-view room, plus $1,500 cash. Ø Volunteer opportunity: Spread the word to the students and the community on the availability of this review course. Ø Volunteer opportunities: Help raise money for scholarships by: a) Purchasing a raffle ticket! b) Selling raffle tickets! c) Sponsor an employee/or other scholar who wishes to earn a scholarship by helping us to raise money. (See student page for more information). The Chapter continually updates and improves the Chapter web site making the site more orientated and useful to potential members, students and the public. The most recent improvement is the introduction of a student page with information on student benefits, membership, chapter scholarships, the CPA exam and the Becker CPA Review course. A CPA license opens the door to many career opportunities. To assist students in exploring their options, the chapter is distributing accounting career books to many of the Valley schools. ONGOING ACTIVITIES The Chapter provides a minimum of ninety six (96) hours of low cost quality CPE each year. Ø Volunteer opportunity: The Board Vice President chairs the committee that selects the speakers and topics for the next year. This committee finds new speakers, negotiates speaker fees, sends contracts to the speakers and prepares the form for the renewal of the CPE Sponsor license. Volunteers are always welcome to join this committee. The Chapter continues to offer an unlimited CPE season pass to TSCPA members and TSCPA non CPA employees at a discounted rate. See our June newsletter each year for the terms and conditions of the pass. To encourage members to attend the general meeting, the Chapter holds a season pass drawing for the next fiscal year at the general meeting. The member must be present to claim the pass but may use the pass for him/her self or for a member of their firm that is eligible for the purchase of a pass. Once used, it may not transfer to another user. The Chapter offers the opportunity to members and member clients to place position wanted, help wanted, practice for sale, practice wanted ads and other similar ads on the Chapter Web site at no cost to the participant. A table is also available at each of the seminars where stacks of these ads may be placed for the seminar participants to pick up. Ads may be placed “blind” by contacting the director and providing contact information to forward responses. The chapter offers opportunities to all students to have a stack of their resumes displayed and distributed at each scheduled seminar. Student members may also have their resume posted to the Chapter web site if e-mailed to the director on Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. The Chapter updates a member directory each year. To protect the members from use by spammers, the directory is distributed to members only. The Chapter continues to offer the sale of US Master Tax Guides each year at a substantially discounted price to members. The Chapter continued to offer CLE (Continuing Legal Education) credit on select tax courses for our dually licensed members and other attorneys in Hidalgo and Cameron Counties. The Chapter participates in several career fairs and school ACE presentations each year. The ACE chairs are Dr Glen Moyes/John Darcy (Upper Valley) and Carol Collinsworth (Lower Valley). The TSCPA provides materials and other “goodies” for distribution at these events and will hold a training program for 5 or more participants. Ø Volunteer opportunity: Notify the chapter director if you have information about an upcoming fair at director@rgvcpa.org. Ø Volunteer opportunity: Volunteer for the speaker network that goes into the schools and make presentations on request. Ø Volunteer opportunity :Volunteer to man the table at career fairs and similar events.
